In the early 1970s, Larry Foster began his quest to depict anatomically precise whale images. With photographs of whaling images only at his disposal, many early drawings were of whale carcasses. He chose his medium – pencil. Why pencil? As Larry put it, “Pencil is the perfect medium to seriously highlight the subject: no water, no oil, no inhibitors – just the graphite, the artist and the subject. The point is to discover how these animals really look – no distractions and nothing made up.”
