SANDY THE GRAY WHALE:
In front of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History in Pacific Grove, California, Sandy the Gray Whale is permanently displayed. She is a 40-foot Ferro-cement sculpture handcrafted by Larry Foster in 1972 in Oakland, California. Sandy is the most climbed-on and photographed whale in America and has been seen by millions of people. Every day, warm or cold, she’s covered with love from kids. Kids made it happen, with their enthusiasm and joy in whale climbing. Sandy drives kids crazy, and someone said, “They will learn whale conservation by the seat of their pants.”
PHEENA THE FIN WHALE: Pheena was created by Larry Foster and was constructed in 1977 at Fort Mason in San Francisco, with financial support from the World Wildlife Fund. Pheena is a
50-foot, fiberglass whale sculpture permanently displayed in California at the Lawrence Hall of Science on the UC Berkeley Campus.
